Sometime after midnight on 22 February, 1950, a fire broke out in 800 gallons of oil used for cooling as part of the 18MeV Princeton cyclotron. The cyclotron was located in the Palmer Physics Lab (now part of the Frist Campus Center). It was originally built in 1936 and had been upgraded several times over the years. Putting out the fire took until mid-morning that day. Fortunately no one was hurt by the blaze or from the resulting smoke. As of October 2019, the salvaged magnet is located in Jadwin Hall- Princeton University Physics Department.
