Frans Pretorius and Paul Steinhardt have been awarded a four-year grant by the Simons Foundation as part of their new Origins of the Universe Initiative. The initiative is to focus on developing new theories of the early cosmos that will yield observational predictions and provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics governing the universe. Along with Dr. Anna Ijjas, a former Princeton Center for Theoretical Science Fellow now at Columbia University, they will be the Principal Investigators of the Cosmological Bounces and Bouncing Cosmology Group that will explore theories in which the Big Bang is replaced by a Big Bounce – a smooth transition from contraction to expansion.
