Search for topological materials becomes significantly simplified within the framework of some special class of Wannier functions. I will explain this technique in some details and give an overview of the ongoing work on global search for candidate topological materials. I will also describe the Wannier-based construction of microscopic models for heterostructures, thin films and wires, that appears to be successful in the case of (at least) zincblende and wurzite materials. Time permitting, I will mention the problem of finding exponentially localized Wannier functions for the occupied bands of topological insulators and point out possible routes to its solution.
