Phases of quantum many particle systems can have low energy effective field theoretic descriptions in terms of gauge theories in their deconfined phase. Such emergent gauge theories play a central role in modern theoretical work in condensed matter physics. In the presence of global symmetry many such phases - with the same emergent gauge structure - can be sharply distinguished. I will describe some of our work elaborating this in the specific context of free U(1) gauge theory in 3+1 space-time dimensions in the presence of time reversal and SO(3) global symmetries.
