Abstract: Symmetry underlies the foundations of quantum field theory, defining concepts like particles and helping to organize their properties. In this talk I will illustrate several modern topics in the study of symmetry including infinite-dimensional representations in conformal field theory, constraints of current algebra and energy conditions, and the interplay of symmetry and topology. I will also describe how some of these techniques can be applied to understand Abelian gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with time-reversal symmetry.
