## Atomic Physics Seminar

### AMO Seminar - Wes Campbell, University of Maryland - Quantum information science with cold ions and molecules

Thu, Feb 9, 2012, 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
We use a collection of trapped atomic ions as a platform for the analog quantum simulation of lattice spin models. By applying spin-dependent optical dipole forces to an ion crystal, a long-range effective spin-spin interaction arises that allows the simulation of spin Hamiltonians that possess nontrivial order in their ground state.

### AMO Seminar - Monika Schleier-Smith - A Squeezed Atomic Clock Enabled by Cavity Feedback - Quantum Many-Body Systems Division LMU Munich

Mon, Jan 23, 2012, 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Over a decade ago, the stability of atomic clocks reached the standard quantum limit, set by the projection noise inherent in measurements on an ensemble of uncorrelated particles.

### AMO Seminar - Building Synthetic Materials from Ultracold Atoms: Quantum Magnetism in an Optical Lattice - Jonathan Simon - Harvard/MIT

Thu, Jan 19, 2012, 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
Ultracold atoms in optical lattices form a unique testbed for quantum many-body physics. Using such systems it has recently become possible to engineer strongly-correlated materials from the ground up and probe them with single-atom resolution.

### AMO Seminar - Quantum phenomena in measurements of collective atomic motion and spin - Nathaniel Brahms - U. of California, Berkeley

Thu, Jan 12, 2012, 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
We typically think of quantum physics as applying to the motion of atom-scale objects. Advances in atomic and device physics are now letting us access quantum phenomena in the collective motion of objects composed of thousands to billions of atoms.

### [TESTING BY SSG] Marc Smiciklas, "A Determination of $\alpha$ Using Precision Measurements of Helium Fine Structure"

Tue, Aug 10, 2010, 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Recently published theoretical predictions by Pachucki and Yerokhin are in good agreement with the most precise measurements of helium fine structure and, for the first time, represent a complete calculation up to and including terms of order $\alpha^7$.
